How Is a Vasectomy Done Without a Needle?
The initial step in the vasectomy procedure is numbing the area of the scrotum where the procedure is done. Traditionally, this is done using a very small needle to inject a solution known as lidocaine, which removes your ability to feel in the immediate area of the injection. The needle entering into the scrotum causes a mild bee sting-like sensation, but typically this is the only pain felt during the procedure and usually lasts no more than 10 seconds. Utilizing a piece of equipment called the MadaJet, we can now infuse the lidocaine through the skin in the form of vaporized lidocaine pressurized at high speed through the skin. This tends to create a greater area of numbness, with less pain from the injection, and uses less medication.
How Is a Vasectomy Done Without a Scalpel?
The necessary component of any vasectomy is interrupting the flow of sperm from the testes along the vas deferens (the tube that conducts sperm). The vas deferens can be easily felt just under the skin leading away from the scrotum as a firm “noodle-like” structure. Traditionally, the vas deferens is accessed by a vasectomy provider by making a 2cm long incision along the skin and retrieving the vas deferens through this hole. The large incision, and stitches needed to close the incision, increases the risk of bleeding, pain, and infection. In the 1970s, a technique was invented where, using a sharp forcep, a tiny hole (usually less than 1 cm) is spread open directly above the vas deferens, allowing the least amount of tissue damage to the area. This also makes the procedure extremely fast, with less pain and a shorter recovery time.
